چکیده

We report a general theorem on sustaining cooperation in inlinitely-repeated games when the possibility of renegotiation constrains punishments not to harm both players. This result generalizes observations recently reported by E. van Damme (Renegotiation-proof equilibria in repeated prisoner’s dilemma, L Econ. Theory 47 (1989), 206217) for the Prisoner’s Dilemma. Contracts , Information Persistence , and Renegotiation ∗

This paper studies how renegotiation and information persistence shape long-term contracts in principal-agent relationships. Truthful contracts that are renegotiation-proof, according to a concept tailored to account for persistence in the agent’s type, are characterized by their sensitivity to the reports of the agent. The sensitivity of the optimal renegotiation-proof contract is increasing i...

Moral Hazard and Renegotiation: Multi-Period Robustness

Is the second best outcome of static agency models renegotiation proof? In models with one period of renegotiation, Fudenberg and Tirole (1990) answer no when the principal makes the offer, while Ma (1994) and Matthews (1995) answer yes when the agent makes the offer. This paper analyzes the robustness of these two claims when there are more periods of renegotiation. With a known number of peri...

Is multilateral enforcement vulnerable to bilateral renegotiation?

In amultilateral enforcement regime, a player who cheats on one partner is punished bymany partners. But if partners can renegotiate in private, they can subvert the power of the multilateral punishment. We introduce a new notion of “bilateral renegotiation proofness” that applies to multilateral games with private monitoring. For symmetric networked environments, we characterize an optimal bil...

Posterior renegotiation-proofness in a two-person decision problem

When two agents with private information use a mechanism to determine an outcome, what happens when they cannot commit to their actions and to a mechanism? We study this problem by allowing agents to hold on to a proposed outcome in one mechanism while they play another mechanism and learn new information. A decision rule is posterior renegotiation-proof if it is posterior implementable and rob...

Renegotiation-Proof Mechanism Design

A mechanism is said to be renegotiation-proof if it is robust against renegotiation both before and after it is played. We ask (1) what kind of environments admit the renegotiation-proof implementation of some social choice rules? (2) for a given environment, what kind of social choice rule are implementable in a way that is renegotiationproof? and (3) for a given renegotiation-proof implementa...
